About

Rhode Island, the Ocean State, has a unique culture. As the first colony to declare independence from Great Britain and the last to sign the Constitution, this small state takes pride in its history. The colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations was established in 1636. Three hundred years later, in 1936, this map was made to commemorate that anniversary.

Now, The Tercentenary Map of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, rescued from my parents damp basement, is getting a new life online. I hope you'll take the time to pan around this map, zoom into the details of the illustrations, and click on the symbols to learn about some of the important places and events from the first 300 years of Rhode Island’s history!
